Why bed bugs are a problem
Bed bugs feed on sleeping people and the bites can be very itchy. Scratching can lead to infection, and broken sleep and stress are common.
They are not a sign of poor hygiene. They travel on luggage, clothes and second-hand furniture, so anyone can get them.
How we get rid of bed bugs
We use an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach, so the bed bugs are cleared and don’t come back.

Bed bug biology and behaviour

eggs laid by one female in her life
5
nymph stages before adulthood
Months
can survive without feeding
Bed bugs hide in mattress seams, bed frames, headboards, skirting boards, behind wallpaper and in sockets. They come out at night to feed, usually for a few minutes.
They spread on luggage, clothing and second-hand furniture, and between neighbouring flats, which is why early treatment matters.
Where we find them

Signs of infestation
- Bites in lines or clusters
- Dark spots on bedding and mattresses
- Blood spots on sheets
- Shed skins and eggs
- A musty smell in heavy infestations
Bites alone do not confirm bed bugs, as other things cause similar marks. Finding the bugs or their spots does.
How to prevent bed bugs
- Inspect second-hand furniture before bringing it in
- Check hotel beds and keep luggage off the bed
- Reduce clutter around beds
- Vacuum mattresses, frames and floors regularly
- Wash bedding hot and dry it on a high heat
- Act early if you spot bites or spots
If you’re having a treatment
- Strip beds and bag the bedding for a hot wash
- Clear clutter around beds and furniture
- Keep all follow-up appointments
- Keep children and pets out of treated rooms until told it is safe

Bed bug FAQs
How long does bed bug treatment take?
It depends on the size of the property and how far the bugs have spread. We’ll give you an idea of timing at the inspection.
How many visits will I need?
Bed bug treatment usually needs a follow-up visit to catch anything that hatches or was missed. We’ll explain the plan after the inspection.
Do I need to throw away my mattress?
Usually not. Mattresses and furniture can often be treated with steam, vacuuming and insecticide.
Can I stay in the property during treatment?
Usually yes, but keep children and pets out of treated rooms until we tell you it is safe.
How can I tell bed bug bites from flea bites?
Bites alone can’t confirm it, because other things cause similar marks. Dark spots on bedding, blood spots, shed skins or live bugs are the reliable signs.
Who pays, the landlord or the tenant?
In many rented homes the landlord is responsible, but it depends on the tenancy agreement and the circumstances. Check your agreement or get advice from Shelter.
