Expert Wasps & Hornet Control
A wasp nest near your home? Keep your distance.
Wasp nests can hold thousands of insects by late summer and become more aggressive when disturbed. Do not try to knock down or spray a nest yourself. Our technicians have the protective equipment and professional products to deal with it safely.
Signs of a nest
- A steady flow of wasps flying to and from one spot, such as a gap in the eaves, airbrick, wall or loft hatch
- A papery, grey nest in a loft, shed, tree, hedge or wall cavity
- Wasps found indoors repeatedly, or a buzzing or scratching sound in walls or ceilings
- Chewed wood fibres on fences or sheds, where wasps collect nest material
Wasps or hornets? Hornets are larger, with a reddish-brown and yellow body, and tend to nest in hollow trees, sheds and wall cavities. Asian hornets are a notifiable invasive species. If you think you have seen one, report it through the official asian hornet species app or website https://www.nonnativespecies.org/non-native-species/species-alerts and tell us.
How our treatment works
- Identification: we confirm the insect and locate the nest.
- Treatment: we apply a professional insecticidal dust under pressure in the nest entrance. This blasts the nest which treats the whole colony. Nests in hard-to-reach places may need extension equipment.
- Activity may continue for a day or two: returning wasps are still carrying the treatment into the nest. This is normal, and activity fades quickly.
- Removal: once the nest is inactive, it can usually be left to break down naturally. Old nests are not reused.
Safety
- Stay away from the nest and keep children and pets indoors during treatment.
- Do not block the nest entrance or spray it yourself. Trapped wasps can chew into your living space.
- Close windows near the nest and avoid the area for 2 hours after treatment.
- Wasp stings can cause serious reactions in some people. If someone has swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or collapses, call 999.
What happens next
- Request a quote and tell us where the nest is, how big it looks and how high up it is. A photo helps.
- We agree a visit and treat the nest.
- We tell you what to expect and advise if a follow-up is needed.
Getting rid of wasps
Wasps become a nuisance to humans mainly in late summer as the weather gets cooler when they become more likely to sting. A wasp, unlike a bee, can sting many times.
Although the wasp sting is not normally serious, it can be very painful, and in certain cases can cause a severe reaction.

What they look like?
All the wasps found in the United Kingdom, with the exception of the hornet, are very similar with black and yellow bands on their body and two pairs of wings.

Where they live
In spring, the fertilized queen leaves her hibernating quarters to seek nesting sites for a new colony. These sites could be holes in the ground, hollow trees, sheds, loft spaces or wall cavities. The queen starts to build her nest with a papery material that she makes by chewing wood mixed with saliva; this is known as wasp paper. She will raise the first few workers who will then enlarge the nest and care for the immature wasps. Nest construction starts in spring and will reach its maximum size in September, when up to 10,000 workers may be present. An old nest is not used in subsequent years.
What they eat?
Wasps usually eat insects, which are mainly garden or household pests. They also feed on dustbin waste and animal carcasses.

What you can do to control the problem?
Nests located in areas away from human contact can be left untreated. It should be remembered that wasps have a beneficial aspect as they kill many garden insect pests.
However, if it is necessary to destroy the nest, it is easy to do so. Wasps are generally easy to control if the nest is destroyed by applying a residual insecticide. This will be in either a dust or liquid form and is applied to the nest entrance or nearby so that wasps entering the nest are contaminated.
How can I get rid of pests?
Bromley Pest Control provides a pest control service for the treatment of wasps, including details of the treatment and post treatment advice.
You are strongly recommended to seek professional help in dealing with a problem wasp’s nest. Consider the risks very carefully before attempting a treatment yourself. Wasps are very aggressive when their nest is threatened, and multiple stings may result if your protective clothing is inadequate.
If you do attempt treatment yourself, when using pesticides always follow the instructions on the label.
